Addis Ababa is fast becoming one of the continent’s leading conference destinations, with impressive facilities, not only for large events, but also for small workshops and seminars.www.fanosethiopiatours.com

Conference Facilities – Operating as an international conference venue since 1958, the United Nations Conference Center (UNCC) built its reputation and experience in welcoming Heads of State, Royalty and dignitaries from all over the globe, as well as through smaller workshops and seminars.

Located in the UN compound on Menelik Avenue, just opposite the National Palace, and within walking distance of the city’s most important hotels, it combines architectural elegance with the very latest technology and sheer practicality. The UNCC offers the ideal venue for all types of meetings.

A four-story structure, the UNCC has two large plenary conference rooms with a seating capacity of 800 and 450 respectively, with seven-language simultaneous interpretation facilities and the latest technology for multi-media presentations.

Another four conference halls seat 115 participants, with four-language interpretation facilities, and nine caucus rooms – usually used for breakout sessions– located behind and above the main conference halls seat 20 participants each.

The facility also includes two briefing rooms, with capacity for 60 and 44 participants. A fully-equipped Business Centre provides access to international telephone, internet andfax services, photocopying and computer workstations. Participants can also make use of two offices behind Conference Room 2, equipped with three computers and one shared printer each. Ministerial, VIP and other offices are also available.

An attractive, modern, and safe conference location, the center provides international standards in telecommunication, including video conferencing and new technology, audiovisual equipment, interpreters and organizational expertise. Among essential services, the conference center can provide accreditation, group transport to and from selected locations, and excellent catering facilities, as well as a state-of-the-art health clinic, post office, banking facilities, travel agents, aduty-free store, a bookstore, and shops for the purchase of essential items, including clothing.

A touch of class – Elegant guest rooms, exceptional recreational and meeting facilities, and an extraordinary selection of fine restaurants make the Sheraton Addis the ideal setting for meetings that require an extra special touch. The Sheraton Addis combines Ethiopia’s richest cultural elements and traditions with international and neoclassical architecture. Aware of Addis Ababa’s position as one of the world’s great crossroads of the aviation age, Sheraton offers upscale banquet and conference facilities for up to 1,500 guests. The hotel’s state-of-the-art Business Center provides secretarial and computer services, with e-mail and fax-printout.

Sheraton Addis offers the most prestigious banquet and conference facilities in Ethiopia, providing over 1,500 sq. metres of meeting space. Nine main meeting rooms can be subdivided into 12 and include the magnificent Lalibela Grand Ballroom with a capacity of up to 1500 guests.

The longer-established Hilton Addis Ababa also offers luxury accommodation and a comprehensive range of banqueting, business and conference facilities.

The modern business centre provides all the essential services expected by the international traveler. Situated in 15 acres of landscaped gardens off Menelik II Avenue, the Hilton, besides standard and deluxe rooms, offers suites and serviced apartments aimed at meeting the needs of long-stay guests. More hotels can be found around Addis ababa with similar facilities (see listings).

At the heart of Addis – Climbing past the hustle and bustle of the central Piazza area of Addis, towards the Entoto hills, the air gets cooler and fresher.

There, set in the grounds of the Ministry of Capacity Building, the once-backyard of the Emperor Haile Selassie’s eldest son is the Ethiopian Convention Center. Hosted in an amphi theater-like structure, this conference center easily seats 1,000, and is often used as a setting for national competitive exams and lectures.

At the back of the amphi theater are translation and projections booths. Its kitchen can be used by caterers for heating and food prepping, with a modest capacity for serving coffee and snacks. An adjacent art gallery is being converted into a permanent photographic exhibition of the Ethiopian peoples, a display of the country’s rich ethnological makeup.

Nestled in the middle of a green garden, the conference center administration is located in small adjacent buildings.

A medium-sized warehouse is available for storage of conference equipment. With a 400-space car park, catering can be set up outside during the dry season, taking full advantage of the garden and clean mountain air of Addis.

Albeit modest, the Ethiopian Convention Center can provide an excellent frame for a conference that is slightly removed from the busier Addis, and one that can suit the more specific needs of a conference organizer.
