Day 1: Arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Air port

Meet and greet you FANOS Ethiopia Tours representative at exit of luggage claim and transfer you to the hotel.

 

Depending on your arrival visit/city tour in Addis Ababa. You will have an early breakfast and your first visit in Addis Ababa will be the National Museum. It houses numerous antiquarian relics and archaeological artifacts (most famous exhibit is the 3.5 million year old skeleton of Lucy). Then you will continue to visit Mount Entoto (3,200 above sea level. The Church of St Mary (1885) and Emperor Menelik II Palace. The Entoto Museum, with its historical exhibits is well worth a visit.

After lunch you will visit Trinity Cathedral. It was constructed by Emperor Haile Selassie in 1947 (ornamented with carvings and mosaic and other artistic works such as paintings of saints and the apostles on the stained glass) and visit Merkato, the largest open market in Africa. In the evening, you will have dinner at the hotel and you will rest.  Overnight stay in Caravan hotel, Addis Ababa.

 

Day 2: Drive to Bahir Dar

After breakfast, you will drive to Bahir Dar (564 Km from Addis). En route, you will visit Debre Libanos Monastery (founded in the 13th century by priest Tekla Haimanot, today one of Ethiopia’s most renowned saints) & the museum.

After 100km from Debre Libanos Monastery the road dropping more than 1000m, gradually winds down to the bottom of the Blue Nile Gorge, which is comparable in scale to American’s Grand Canyon cited to be the largest canyon in Africa. You will stop for lunch at Debre Markos.

Then you will arrive in Bahir Dar (late afternoon). You will check into a hotel. You will have dinner, rest & spend the night there. Overnight stay in Summerland hotel, Bahir Dar.

 

Day 3: Boat Ride on Lake Tana to Visit Island Monasteries and visit Blue Nile Falls

You will have an early breakfast and drive to Lake Tana, take a boat ride where you will visit to the medieval period island monasteries (beautiful mural paintings, religious books & sacred) on Lake Tana such as: Kibran Gabriel (only for men), Entos and on the Zegien peninsula visit Ura Kidan Mehiret, Azuwa Mariam, Mahal  Giorgis.

After lunch, you will drive (some 30 Km) and visit to the Blue Nile Falls. Optional Excursion: Early in the evening, after dinner you will visit ‘Azmari Bet’ at Traditional Music Houses after which you will back to the hotel and stay there for the night. Overnight stay in Summerland hotel, Bahir Dar.

 

Day 4: Drive to Gondar and Visit the Fassiladas Castles

You will be driven to Gondar (185 Km) right after breakfast. Then you will check into a hotel and after a brief break, you will have lunch.

Then, you will visit to the Royal Castles & the Bath of Emperor Fasiledes (the bath is filled with water for the important Timkat (epiphany) ceremony once a year.  You will continue your visit to Debre Birhan Selassie Church (Trinity at the Mount of Light). Overnight stay in Quara hotel, Gonder.

 

Day 5: Drive to Simien Mountains National Park

You will have breakfast & drive to Debark (100 Km from Gonder) finish formalities at the Head Quarter of the park at Debarq and continue to drive another 20km then make a short walk/trek and spend the day visiting the Simien Mountains National Park (registered by UNESCO as a world heritage site, with endemic & mammals, birds, natural vegetation, & wonderful landscape).

Late in the afternoon drive back to Debark. You will check into a hotel and take a break. Dinner will be at the hotel. Overnight stay in Sona or Simien Park hotel, Debark.    

 

Day 6: Drive to Axum

Right after breakfast, an early morning drive will take you to Axum (270 Km from Debark) through the Simien Mountains & magnificent topography & scenery, the Limalimo Gorge, Tekeze Valley. You will arrive in Axum late in the afternoon. You will check into a hotel and take a break. Dinner will be at the hotel. Overnight stay in Berhana or Sabean hotel, Axum.

 

Day 7: City Tour in Axum

You will have breakfast and will visit all day to the Steale of Axum, the Inscription of Ezana, Queen Sheba’s Palace, the famous St. Mary of Zion Church, ruins of ancient palaces (built until 4th century A.D.), with lunch break in between then outside Axum you can visit also the tombs of Kings Kaleb & Gebre Meskel dating to 6th century.

In the evening, you will get back to the hotel and spend the night there. Overnight stay in Berhana or Sabean hotel, Axum.

 

Day 8: Drive to Hawizen via Adigrat

After breakfast, you will be driven to Hawizen (250 Km from Axum). On the way you can visit Ethiopia’s earliest known capital city of Yeha which is considered as the birthplace of the country’s earliest civilization. Its single most remarkable antiquity is the well-preserved walls of the 12m-high stone temple of the moon that is thought to be over 2500 years old.

Another possible excursion is to Debre Damo monastery (only accessible for men). The Debre Damo Monastery is built on the flat- topped mountain of Debre Damo. The monastery is only accessible by climbing a rope which hangs down from a perpendicular rock, an adventure in itself! Overnight stay in Gheralta lodge, Hawizen.

 

Day 9: Visit the Rock-hewn Churches of Tigray and drive to Mekelle

After breakfast, you will visit some of the most beautiful medieval churches on impressive viewpoints such as: Abuna Yemata Guh, Debre Maryam Korkor or Abreha WeAtsheba church, all situated near to the road between Mekele and Hawzien. It requires climbing a steep mountain to reach these churches so good walking/mountain shoes are recommendable.

Lunch at Hawizen lodge. Then drive to Mekelle. You will arrive in Axum late in the afternoon. You will check into a hotel and take a break. Dinner will be at the hotel. Overnight stay in Atse Yohanes hotel, Mekelle.

 

Day 10: Drive to Lalibela

After breakfast, you will be driven to Lalibela (470 Km from Mekele) through the Ambalage Chain of Mountains. Your arrival in Lalibela will be late in the afternoon. You will check into a hotel, have dinner and spend the night there. Overnight stay in Panoramic View Hotel, Lalibela.

 

Day 11: Visit the Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela

Early in the morning, after breakfast, your visit will be to the eleven rock-hewn monolithic (carved from a single rock) churches of Lalibela (UNESCO World heritage site, with magnificent architecture & paintings inside the churches). In the evening you will get back to the hotel, rest, have dinner and relax. Overnight stay in Panoramic View Hotel, Lalibela.

 

Day 12: One more day to explore the Lalibela Rock-hewn Churches

Right after breakfast, an early morning drive will take you to historical churches around Lalibela like the Hill Church of Asheton Mariam (on the back of a mule or on foot), Yimerhane Kirsotos, Nakute LeAb or Genete Maryam. Overnight stay in Panoramic View Hotel, Lalibela. 

 

 

 

Day 13: Drive to Kombolcha

An early morning drive after breakfast will take you to Kombolcha (335 Km). En route visit Hayk Estifanos Monastery (45 Km before Kombolcha, famous for its variety of bird life near the town of Hayk). Later, you will drive to Kombolcha & upon arrival, you will check into a hotel & stay the night there. Overnight stay in Sunny Side hotel, Kombolcha.

 

Day 14: Drive to Awash

After breakfast, you will be driven to Awash Park (apprx. 450 Km from Kombolcha). You will have lunch a picnic lunch.

You will arrive in Awash late in the afternoon. Check in to the hotel. You will have dinner and spend the night in the hotel.  Overnight stay in Genet hotel, Awash.

 

Day 15: Game driving in Awash National Park

After breakfast, you will drive to Awash National Park (15 Km from Awash town). Up on arrival at the park, you will check into a park visit all day to the Mount Fentale, game viewing, bird watching, and viewing crocodiles. You will have lunch in the bush, picnic lunch. In the late afternoon, you will do sightseeing at the Awash waterfalls and see the wild life.

Early in the evening, you will get back to the hotel. Then you will have dinner & spend the night there. Overnight stay in Genet hotel, Awash.

 

Day 16: Drive to Harar

You will have an early breakfast and drive to Harar (318 Km from Awash). You will stop for lunch at Asebe Teferi and you will arrive in Harar late in the afternoon where you will check into a hotel. Then you will have dinner & spend the night there. Overnight stay in Heritage Plaza Hotel.

 

Day 17: Visit the Walled town of Harar

You will have an early breakfast and visit the walled city of Jegol, the house of Arthur Rimbaud (a French poetry who lived 1880’s in Harar), Emperor Haile Selassie home (where he was born & raised) and Harari Cultural Museum. Early in the evening, you will visit man feeding wild hyenas. In the evening, you will have dinner and stay the night at the hotel. Overnight stay in Heritage Plaza Hotel.

 

Day 18: Drive to Debre Ziet/Bishoftu

After breakfast, you will be driven back to Debre Ziet/Bishoftu (425 Km). Then you will drive to Debre Ziet (50 Km before Addis Ababa). On arrival check in to the hotel. You will have dinner and spend the night in the hotel. Overnight stay in Dreamliner hotel, Debre Ziet.

 

 

Day 19: Drive to Langano

After breakfast, you will be driven to Langano (150Km from Debre Ziet/Bishoftu), where on your way make a stop on Awash River and Lake Ziway to visit aquatic birds. You will have lunch  in Ziway.

En route, you will visit Lake Abijatta-Shala National Park, Lake Shala (a very deep crater lake – over 260 meters deep) and Lake Abiatta (a soda lake with thousands of flamingos).

Your arrival in Langano will be late afternoon where you will check into a lodge. Later, you will relax on the beach. You will have dinner and stay the night in the lodge. Overnight stay in Sabana Beach Resort or Borati Lodge.

 

Day 20:  Drive to Dinsho, Bale Mountains National Park Head Quarter

In the morning after breakfast, you will drive to Dinsho (150Km from Langano). Upon arrival, you will do all the requirements for short easy trekking at the Bale Mountains National Park HQ. You will have lunch in the bush.

 

After a brief break, you will have time to make a short hike along the northern part of the park. Later late in the afternoon drive to Goba (40 Km from Dinsho) for overnight stay. On arrival, you will check into a hotel. In the evening, you will have dinner and stay the night at the hotel. Overnight stay in Wabe Shebelle Hotel, Goba.

 

Day 21: Excursion/Day trip to Sanetti Plateau

In the morning, you will have breakfast and drive to the Sanetti Plateau (20 Km from Goba, altitude of 4,000 meter, with Afro-alpine Moor land, beautiful wild alpine scenery). Drive to Harenna forest the Southern most part of the park and have tea/coffee at Bale Lodge. In the evening, you will have dinner and stay the night at the hotel. Overnight stay in Wabe Shebelle Hotel, Goba.

 

Day 22: Day trip to Sof Omar cave looking for the endemic Salvador’s Seedeater

Right after breakfast, an early morning drive will take you to Sof Omar to visit the Sof Omar cave (100 Km from Goba & a site of an amazing complex of natural caves, cut by the Weyb River) and the endemic Salvador’s Seedeater, and different birds.

 

Late in the afternoon drive back to Goba and you will have dinner and stay the night in the lodge. Overnight stay in Wabe Shebelle Hotel, Goba.

 

Day 23: Drive to Yirega Alem

In the morning after breakfast, you will drive to Yirega Alem (275 Km from Goba). And upon arriving in Yirega Alem in the afternoon, you will check into a lodge.  You will have lunch in Awassa.

Then you will drive to Yiregalem (50 Km from Awassa). On arrival check in to the lodge. After a brief break explore the surrounding Sidama Village and its organic garden coffee. Overnight stay in Aregash Lodge.

 

 

 

Day 24:  Drive to Awassa /Hawassa/

In the morning after breakfast, you will drive to Awassa (50 Km from Yirega Alem). And upon arriving in Awassa in the afternoon, you will check into a hotel. Later, you wil walk along the lake shore for nice evening sunset and aquatic birds. You will have dinner and spend the night at the hotel. Overnight stay in Oasis International Hotel, Awassa.

 

Day 25: Drive to Arba Minch through Wolayta Sodo

In the morning after breakfast, you will drive to Arba Minch (280 Km from Awassa). On the visit the scenic morning Fish market in Awassa. Then you will drive to Arba Minch (280 Km from Awassa). On the way you will visit Senkelle Wildlife Sanctuary (90 Km from Awassa, well-known for endemic and endangered subspecies of Swayne’s Hartebeest) and you will stop for lunch at Wolayta (154 Km from Awassa).

You will be arriving in Arba Minch late afternoon and check into a lodge. You will have dinner and spend the night at the lodge. Overnight stay in Ezana or Zebib Pension, Arba Minch.

 

Day 26: Visit Nech Sar National Park and drive to Dorze

In the morning, after breakfast you will take a boat ride on Lake Chamo and visit to huge crocodiles, hippos, a variety of birdlife and you will also visit to the nearby Nech Sar National Park (a natural habitat for many wild animals: Zebra, Gazelle, & Antelope etc.). You will have lunch break at Arba Minch.

After a brief break, you will continue driving to Dorze (50 Km from Arba Minch) and visit to the Dorze village (famous for their bee hive shaped houses, weaving styles and their lifestyle) & visit also Chencha Saturday market (7km from Dorze). In the evening you will have dinner at the lodge and stay the night there. Overnight stay in Ezana or Zebib Pension, Arba Minch.

 

Day 27: Drive to Turmi, Hammer tribe town via Arebore – Tsemay

After breakfast you will be driven to Turmi (280 Km from Arba Minch). You will have lunch in Konso (90 Km from Arba Minch). The continue your drive to Turmi via Arebore-Tsemay while visit the Arebore (Erebore) village. You will arrive in Turmi late in the afternoon. Check-in to the lodge. You will have dinner and spend the night at the lodge. Overnight stay in Turmi or Buska Lodge.

 

Day 28: Excursion to Omorate to visit Dassench/Geleb tribe

An early morning drive will take you to Omorate to visit the Dassench/Geleb tribe (75 Km from Turmi). From there, you will take a boat trip on the Omo River and visit the Dassench/Geleb village.

 

Then you will get back to Turmi for lunch. You will then walk to the non-touristic Hammer Village to explore the Hammer tribes (best known for elaborate hairstyles, body painting using clays and vegetable pigments to make fantastic patterns on their faces, chests, arms and legs), attend the bull jumping – if possible and available with luck.

Or you will also visit the Hammer Monday Market in Turmi. In the evening, you will be driven back to the lodge for dinner and spend the night at the lodge. Overnight stay in Turmi or Buska Lodge.

 

 

Day 29: Excursion to Murille to visit Karo Village

An early morning drive will take you to Murille to visit the Karo tribe (62 Km from Turmi). You will spend the day visiting the Karo village. You will have lunch in the bush, take picnic lunch. Late in the afternoon drive back to Turmi for overnight stay. In the evening you will have dinner and spend the night at the lodge. Overnight stay in Turmi or Buska Lodge.

 

Day 30:  Drive to Jinka

After breakfast you will be driven to Turmi (142 Km from Turmi), visiting an interesting village on the way. You will continue travelling to Key Afer and visit the Thursday Key afar market. You will have lunch in Key afar.  You will proceed driving to Jinka (40 Km from Key afar).

 

You will arrive in Jinka early/mid-afternoon. Check in to hotel/resort. Take your own time. Rest, relax or walk by yourself in the town and/or follow your own program. You will have dinner and spend the night at the hotel/resort. Overnight stay in Jinka Resort or Orit hotel.

 

Day 31: Excursion to Mursi village through Mago National Park

In the morning after breakfast, you will be driven to Mursi (55 Km from Jinka) and visit to the of Mursi tribe village (popularly known for their attractive culture, women wearing large clay plates into their lower lips). Then you will drive back to Jinka for lunch.

After lunch, you will visit to the nearby Ari village and museum in Jinka. Dinner will be at the lodge and you will spend the night at the lodge. Overnight stay in Jinka Resort or Orit hotel.    

 

Day 32: Drive to Konso

In the morning after breakfast, you will be driven to Konso (160 Km from Jinka, famous for their colorfully costumed dresses, impressive terracing of land – recently registered as World heritage by UNESCO, and engraved wooden statues grave markers). On the way visit the Thursday Key Afar market.

You will arrive early in the afternoon. Checking in to the lodge. You will have lunch in the logde. In the afternoon visit Konso Village, museum & depending on the time visit New York (17 Km from Konso, a natural land slip phenomena with mud towers). Later back to the hotel. You will have dinner and spend the night at the hotel. Overnight stay in Kanta Lodge, Konso.

 

Day 33: Visit the Konso Village and drive to Wolayta Sodo

After breakfast you will be driven to not touristic & UNESCO registered Konso village, where you will spend the day visiting and taking pictures. You will have lunch in Kanta lodge.

Early in the afternoon drive to Wolayta Sodo (215 Km from Konso). Check into a hotel. You will have dinner and spend the night at the hotel. Overnight stay in Bekelle Molla hotel, W/Sodo.

 

Day 34: Drive to Jimma 

In the morning after breakfast, you will drive to Jimma (345 Km from Wolayta Sodo). On the way you will pass through beautiful landscapes of the Dawro Zone. You will notice also the defense wall of Dawro people (The wall is called the wall of King Halala (or Halala kela) a long historical defensive wall constructed during the period of king Keti Halala in between 1764-1789. You will have a picnic lunch.

You will arrive in Jimma late afternoon and you will have dinner and spend the night at the hotel.  Overnight stay in Honey Land or Central Jimma Hotel.

 

Day 35: Visit Jimma

In the morning after breakfast, you will visit Jimma Museum and King Abba Jiffar Place (the last King of the Jimma region). You will have dinner and spend the night at the hotel. Overnight stay in Honey Land or Central Jimma Hotel.

 

Day 36: Drive to Bonga, Kaffa the Birth place of Coffee

In the morning, you will have breakfast and drive to Bonga (125Km from Jimma). And upon arrival at Bonga and check in to a hotel. You will have lunch at Bonga. Later you will be driven to the forest and you will start a short trek/walk to the birth place of Coffee, Makira.

Late afternoon you will be driven back to Bonga. You will have dinner and spend the night at the hotel. Overnight stay in Coffee land or similar hotel.

 

Day 37: Visit waterfalls, forest & natural bridge and drive to Tepi 

An early morning drive will take you to surrounding Bonga forest with its Natural Bridge and Berta waterfalls. You will have lunch in Bonga.

After lunch you you will have free or follow your own program.  You will have dinner and spend the night at the hotel. Overnight stay in Coffee land or similar hotel.

 

Day 38: Drive to Woliso

In the morning after breakfast, you will drive to Woliso (345 Km from Bonga) on the way you will pass through beautiful landscapes as you drive through the Gibe River Valley.  You will have lunch in Wolqite/Wolkite, (which is home to the Gurage tribe, known as “the hardest working people in Ethiopia).

You will be arriving in Woliso late in the afternoon and check into a lodge. You will have dinner and spend the night at the lodge. Overnight stay in Negash Lodge, Woliso.

 

Day 39: Day trip to the Crater Lake of Wonchi

An early morning drive will take you to visit the village of Wonchi  (27 kms west of Woliso) where you will enjoy a horse riding down to the shore of the Crater Lake Wonchi. By boat, reach an interesting church found on the island (the scenic beauty of the crater, walking, horse riding, boat trip to the island monastery, and a valley with hot mineral springs). You will have a picnic lunch.

Then late in the afternoon drive to Woliso. You will have dinner, rest & spend the night there. Overnight stay in Negash Lodge, Woliso.

 

 

Day 40: Drive back to Addis Ababa

In the morning, after breakfast you will drive back to Addis Ababa (100 km from Woliso). En route visit Tiya (a UNESCO heritage, where of a peculiar type of engraved, grave marking standing stelae) and Melka-Kunture (a Prehistoric Site & one of the most important archeological sites in Ethiopia).You will arrive in Addis Ababa mid/late afternoon where you will do some shopping for souvenirs.

Finally you will be taken to a farewell dinner to Ethiopian (Habesha 2000 or YOD Abyssinia) traditional restaurant where you will taste Ethiopian food & drinks and a live music & dance.

Then depending on your scheduled flight; you will be transferred out to Bole International Airport for return flight back home.
